The idea of cyberspace has been a part of our contemporary culture for some time , particularly in the popular medium of film . But is the concept of cyberspace still relevant to our contemporary society? Discuss with reference to your own experience of temporary media.

October 30, 2009

Cyberspace is a much more difficult term to define. It is the global domain of electromagnetics as employed through electronic technology and it enables to succeed a wide range of communication . Its occupation is to produce a virtual interactive experience accessed for the purpose of communication and control unheeding of a geographic location. The construction of cyberspace environment has been a goodness for more than a decade since the emergence of possibilities that is the internet.

Large part of cyberspace work is done by William Gibson and he is the one who develpoed the notion of cyberspace. Also in his science fiction he used the word “Neuromancer” to the Cyberspace.

Ran corporation is brought the idea of the internet in 1960 .In those days internet just enabled the search facility whereas nowadays it has developed into a prominent term as Cyberspace.Actually, it does not lie within the borders. It is wrong to think that you can build it, as though it were a public construction project. Also it posses the qualities of artificial intelligence as it continues to develop more wondering skills in its leading path’s which exist in today’s virtual world. This virtual reality and imagination makes people to experience in ways to the real world. For instance people could communicate, share, and explore, research, do businesses, play and shop. It does not require any physical movement except moving the hand for such as typing. To clarify, it consists of transactions, relationships, and thought itself, arrayed like a standing flourish in the web of our communications. Ours is a world that is both everywhere and nowhere, but it is not where bodies live.

Therefore it is understood Internet is the large part of cyberspace which exists in today’s world. Also it is used by millions of people for different purposes such as to collect information about a particular subject, know the worldly events,to participate in politics, view and share the media , watch movies and many more. The internet’s world wide web is the instrument which allows and assists people to experience all these events mentioned above.

It is clear that the entire world is swamped by the events of virtual reality which is the primary feature of cyberspace so that it confirms cyberspace has become our part of contemperory society. Virtual reality movies are good examples for which allow sentient programs to interact with humans. Andoromedia,Avolon,Avatar,(cyber wars),E xistenz, I.K.U,Lawn mower man and Matrix are some of the examples for virtual reality movies. For instance “Matrix” which is already one of the most dominant in science fiction, and is strictly one of the keystone cyberpunk movies in existence today. Also it pushes the limits of computerized influence and shows such as terrific action, splendid cyberpunk concepts, incredible cyberpunk visuals, cool idealistic thoughts, and an absolutely awesome soundtrack to emphasize its idea. People in Matrix believe that this cyberspace is real. But if someone is brought outside the matrix can realize which is virtual world or just a production of software. Therefore this kind of work enables users to change directions of the society such as make people believe that they can not do. To exemplify when neo a main character from matrix, learns to handle bullets this is seen as an unworkable job by others. Because they believe as cyber world is similar to the real world. Many folks believe that matrix is real and do not perceive the cruel fact of the real world that exists. This conception has been emphasized in comparatively new movies as well so that shows clearly the inspiration of cyberspace is still relevant in society (Andy & Larry Wachoski, 1999).

Cyberspace plays significant roles in each person’s life as i observed. I am also involved in this interactive and imaginary world.I am a only a participant but not an addict. It provides interact with people all over the world. As a cyberspace participant I do many useful thinks in my life. For example, I chat with my friends in overseas and speak to one another using video call which allow us to see the person who I speak to and also it gives the real feeling that I am talking face to face. It is amazing. Moreover I use conference call using skpe, yahoo or msn to talk to my father, mother and brothers which is thrilling event and not only makes me glad but enables me to talk to everyone in my family at the same time as we all at home together. It is a wonderful facility which cyberspace permits. As well as that I shop my cloths, jewelleries , watches , bags and books from overseas so that I get the stuff I want. Similarly, face book allows me talk to my friends live far away, exchange messages faster, exchange pictures, find old friends and kep in touch. Also cyberspace allow us to do different things such as go in the roller coaster using 3D world if you have not experienced and it gives the real amazing experience. Therefore I think cyberspace gives lots of valuable experiences which push people stick into it. Therefore it is appropriate to say that “cyberspace has been a part of our culture”.

Tutorial task- week 9 (Essay question)

October 1, 2009

This task assisted me to get started working on my assay. I have chosen the topic below.

“The idea of the Internet as cyberspace has been a part of our contemporary culture for sometime, particularly in the popular medium of film. But is the concept of cyberspace still relevant to our contemporary society. Discuss with references to your own experience of contemporary media”

Find at LEAST 5 books or journal articles that you are useful to answering your question. You should write 50 words about each of the resources; focus on the following:
What is the key argument or information in this resource?
Is the view or information the same as the other resources you have found?
How does it contribute to your argument?
Is there a key quote that describes the main point of the article?
By the end of this week’s task you will have at least half of the material necessary to write the assessment item. Good work! 😀

You can refine the material during the semester break and later in the semester.

Digital writing –Lecture 9

October 1, 2009

Today’s lecture was amazing. A guest lecturer Jason Nelson, an American expert in digital poet/electronic literature icons gave the lecture. It was about Cyber utopia, Digital writing and dot com crash. Cyber utopia is a non –existent internet. It is a place where data could be sent any where to anyone in a matter of seconds.

The lecture was started with the visualization about search sites. It was interesting to know a list of social net network sites and the aims of these different sites. People have spent lots of money to build up these sites which help people to make or earn money. Elf town, vampire rave, Home star Runner and 4chain are some social net work sites for example.4chain is an enormous site as I came to know from this lecture. Wikipedia which is called free encyclopedia is a great example for collaboration because people could add or do what they want to and it has a lot of intelligent satire. Nelson spoke about the site Pirate Bay and said which is hidden under the umbrella of Swedish law and tracks
Bit Torrent files which is one of the most common protocols for transferring large files.

Also Nelson spoke about the Dot com crash and gave a brief explanation about digital poetry. He showed some games which he has been working on I found Nelson’s site “secret technology.com” about digital poetry which is a useful one. On the whole not only this lecture taught me new stuff but also it was an enjoyable lecture for me.

Cyber politics & Democracy (Lecture 8)

October 1, 2009

This week lecture notes is really confusing. I don’t understand what it says exactly so I surfed on the net to get understanding about the topic.

The lecture was about Cyber politics which is a term widely functioned across the world and it is the scope of analysis of the content of political discussion on the internet and to see how the internet is being used politically.
There are a couple of questions that people are concerned on Cyber politics and democracy such as who are the cybercitizens using the internet, how do they participate in the political process, and who uses the internet most effectively to accomplish political ends. I think these questions will help anyone to get a clear picture about the heading. Anyway, cyber politics play a huge role in political activities that occur on forums, between bogglers even in games.

Democracy refers to the internet intervention in and contribution to real world politics that exists predominantly off the internet. To clarify, E-democracy (electronic and democracy) represents the use of information and communication technologies and strategies by democratic actors within political and governance processes of local communities, nations and on the international stage. Nowadays in many countries citizen are more likely to use web sites to support their candidates. For instance, In the United States just over half of the population vote, and in the United Kingdom only 69% of English citizens do so. Also democracy covers such as political debates,
Compagins or ciritisisms.

Likewise, this lecture taught about the battle between free speech and censorship and how they have taken many strange turn on the net.In my opinion, without free speech there is no democracy. John Gilmore says in the lecture notes “Deliberation and discussion are key attributes of democracymaybe talk is the most important element of democtratic activity. The ability to convince and the willingness to be convinced are what provide the give and take that make democracy something for all citizens. And that requires access to free speech”

Creative Commons-Lecture Week 7

September 30, 2009

This week lecture is about Creative commons and Free/Libre open source software. The key words of the lecture such as community, collaboration, and choice give the primary ideas of what lecture intends to.
Community: when people share and do something good the whole community benefits.
Collaboration: Instead of going against copyright and breaking the law people can work together to create good things.
Choice: you have a choice and right to create and communicate using your computer as a computer user.

Creative commons is an internationally active non profit organization which was started in December 2002.
This organization allows people to share, reuse, repurpose, and remix creative material by providing a license that let creators give permission in advance for certain uses of their material. Every creative work is protected automatically by copyright. Also it prevents others from using the work in certain ways such as copying and putting online. Furthermore this organization uses voluntary tools to create a public good.

Open source software is computer software which for the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders is provided under a software licence. This permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. The open source software works according to the source code which tells the instruction written in programming languages that tell computer to do something. The free OS was called GNU. GNU public license which is a legal document that controls the limits of the software. The open source which attempt to push “free software” in to the business world which is replaced with open source that potrays on open not in free. VLC, firefox, Linux and open office are some of the free softwares

Consumption & Production (Lecture-6)

September 23, 2009

I was sick so I had to miss the lecture. I went through the lecture notes of “video production and consumption” and trying to summarize it as I understood.

Traditional new media producers have produced the content and we are consumers of content. Cinema, TV, and Pc are measured as the “big” screens of life so, content has been broadcast to the users. Also personal media player or ipods, mobile phones, smart phones such as iPhones are considered as the “small” screens of life. Consumers of small screens of life that enable us to produce our own identity such as face book, you tube in the process of consuming and producing products. Therefore consumers are ever more occupied in the creation of small screen of life.

Mobile phone allows engaging yourself in different role such as recording an event, take a picture, video an event, access to face book, internet, create and save stuffs such as notes and many more. Thus consumption is mainly becoming personal. However, if think of entertainment people produce is usually too long-form and also it looks and sounds terrible so it does not allow access via mobile phones. The best thing is it’s time for people to invent shorter forms of entertainment which enable access via mobile phones.

I do different things using my mobile phone in my daily life. For instance on the way to the university I text my friends, hear to some speeches of different scholars of our religion or hearing Quran, chat on Skype with my friends in overseas ,I access to face book and also I check daily weather condition on my cell phone. It makes my traveling time very useful. New technology has made such as mobile, ipod users to experience heaps of events and to make their time precious.

what are the qualitative differences between the regular IM program and a 3D environment?

August 28, 2009

3D environment is an amazing program which take to experience many different tasks in the world. For instance It will allow to walk, fly swim, ride a boat and many more things. It gives a fun real experience which allows to meet up with people and express your emotions.3D allows the user to explore places, shops and to do unusual things and stimulate people’s thinking and broden their mind by giving a real world experience. It’s a good brainstorm.
I think this kind of enviroment assist to perceive about the worldy matters, stimulate to do different things and also give a kind of education
MSN is different from 3D which doesn’t allow you to experience different things like in a world. For example I have to be myself and do whatever i want to such as to chat or talk or exchange files and also have to be in one place can’t walk around or do other activities.
